The Three Bears, Day 1
Today, we read "Goldilocks and the Three Bears"! After reading the first version, we discussed large, medium, and small by cutting out bowls and graphing them by which bear they matched!
At large group, we read another version of the story using a big book and acted out the story! Meet Goldilocks...
and the three bears!
When the bears tasted their porridge, they decided it was too hot...
so they decided to go for a walk!
While they were out, Goldilocks went to their house. She tried everyone's porridge and actually ate all of Baby Bear's!
Then, she sat in everyone's chairs...
and even broke Baby Bear's!
If that weren't enough, she tried out all of their beds...
and fell asleep in Baby Bear's!
While she was sleeping upstairs, the three bears came home and realized someone had been in their porridge...
AND someone had broken Baby Bear's chair...
AND that someone was still in Baby Bear's bed!!
Goldilocks was so terrified when she woke up and saw the bears standing there...
that she ran away and never went in anyone's house uninvited again!!
Jimmy as Papa Bear, Lexie as Mama Bear, Landon G. as Baby Bear (that was his sad face because his chair was broken...he was still in character :) ), and Deanna as Goldilocks!
During centers, we got to explore dry oatmeal in the sensory table! Students will be able to visit this center all week using large, medium, and small measuring utensils!
Forest Animals Continued!
Yesterday, to begin our week, our class read the oh-so-fun story, Going On a Bear Hunt! After reading, we used our creative brains to make a story map of the scenes in the story during small groups!
We also read about owls and got to play a cool game to help us learn owl facts! Since owls are nocturnal (we have been talking about that big kid word alot), we turned out all the lights and used flashlights to hunt hidden owl fact cards around the room! Everyone got to take a turn with a partner...see some of our photos below!
We had to go through thick, oozey mud...
We had to go through a deep, dark forest...
We had to go through a swirling, whirling snowstorm...
We had to go through a deep, cold river...
We had to go through a dark, gloomy cave...
We had to go through tall, wavy grass...

Forest Animals, Week 1
During our first week studying forest animals, we learned about "Red Riding Hood" by reading several versions of the tale and comparing them. I was so impressed with how many details we were able to recall!
We also read "The Kissing Hand" series and compared these stories. In the first book, we met Chester the raccoon who was nervous about beginning school. His mother gave him a special kiss in his hand that he could carry with him througout the day to remember how much she loved him. We also learned that raccoons are nocturnal in this story so we graphed things that happen in the day and night after reading. One small group also made a story map about the story. Also, be on the lookout for a special surprise from your child related to this story!
And, on Friday, our class got to read Jamberry. Unfortunately, Mrs. Heather (along with several of our classmates) was out with the stomach bug so I missed all the fun! Mrs. Melba led our lessons for the day which included tasting different berries, graphing our favorite one, and making describing words about what we tasted. Students were also able to make up their own silly kind of berry!
