Yellow Day

We wore yellow (this was right after we woke up from nap so pardon some of the sleepy faces)...

We made a circle map of yellow things...

We sang "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"...

Rudra pointed to each word as we sang!  We also got to play the rhythm using instruments!

And, we shared our "show and tell" items...

Teddy brought another train!  His yellow train is named Duncan!

Pierre showed us his yellow digger toy that he broke in the bath tub!

Lexie showed us her yellow wind-up duck that she got from Cracker Barrel!

Campbell has a yellow bulldozer that came from Wal-Mart!

Landon G. checked out a yellow book about airplanes from the library this morning!

Landen W. shared his yellow Bumblebee toy and told us it was his favorite Transformer!

Breanna shared her yellow "duckie" that Santa brought her!  We even got to hear him snore!

Happy Birthday Bailey!

Orange Day

We wore orange...

We counted orange things in our counting jar...

And several friends shared show-and-tell items...

Breanna has an orange apron for when she paints!

Pierre has an orange "Ben 10" toy he got from McDonald's!

Teddy has an orange train named Rusty!

Olivia has an orange Garfield!  That definitely brought back some memories!

Landen has an orange car that he likes to "roll all over the place!"

And Aubree wanted to share her pink bear that her grandmother gave her since we read Pinkalicious yesterday!

What a mess!!

This is what happened when we cut pictures from magazines today to make a class book about our favorite colors...

Lucky for me, our class knows how to work together to clean up a mess!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear

In Mrs. Heather's small group today, we read Brown Bear, Brown Bear.  After reading, we made a color chain to help us retell the story...brown bear, red bird, yellow duck, blue horse, green frog, purple cat, white horse, black sheep, orange fish.  If your child brings home a chain today, see if they remember the story.  Students in Miss Melba's group today worked on sorting.  Those students will complete the "Brown Bear" activity tomorrow!

RED DAY!!

We wore red...

We ate a red snack...

And we acted out The Little Red Hen!
Colby the Rat, Campbell the Frog, Jordan the Cat, & Deanna the Little Red Hen

In this version, the little red hen found a recipe for a cake instead of bread.  Like the original, however, nobody helped her get the ingredients or mix it up...

or bake it...

or decorate it...

And when it was time to eat it, the Little Red Hen (notice the hand on her hip) told them she would eat it by herself, too!

Don't forget to wear orange tomorrow!!

And, Mrs. Lamb and Mrs. Mabry (also second grade teachers) let us meet their rabbit!

Our class hermit crab made an appearance as well!

Dr. Bennett and a few board members even stopped by to check out the fun!

Diaper Science

During family week, we have been discussing babies and which of our friends have babies in their family.  One thing is always pretty obvious when we talk about babies...4 year olds love to tell you all about baby diapers!!

So...this week our class completed our first science experiment using diapers!  Well, actually, a diaper and a pull-up!  Our goal was to see which of the two could hold the most liquid (water for the purpose of the experiment :) ) and we tested this by adding a cup of water, 1 at a time, to each diaper until it leaked.

After adding each cup of water, we held it in the air to see if it would leak.  Look at those faces!!  They couldn't wait to see the water pour out!!

Students took turns adding a smiley face to a graph each time we added a cup of water to the diapers.  After both diapers leaked, we counted the smiley faces to see which one held the most water.

To help us understand the concept of most, two friends stacked blocks according to how many smiley faces we counted...one set for the diaper and one set for the pull-up.

We were then able to look at the stacks of blocks and determine which one was the most because one stack was taller than the other. Our winner...the pull-up!!  It held 2 more cups of water than the diaper!

Perhaps the coolest part of our experiment came at the end.  We cut the diapers apart and felt the squishy insides of the wet diapers (no worries...I made them promise to never try this at home....I warned them that it wouldn't be just water in a wet diaper they might find at home!)!
