During family week, we have been discussing babies and which of our friends have babies in their family. One thing is always pretty obvious when we talk about babies...4 year olds love to tell you all about baby diapers!!
So...this week our class completed our first science experiment using diapers! Well, actually, a diaper and a pull-up! Our goal was to see which of the two could hold the most liquid (water for the purpose of the experiment :) ) and we tested this by adding a cup of water, 1 at a time, to each diaper until it leaked.
After adding each cup of water, we held it in the air to see if it would leak. Look at those faces!! They couldn't wait to see the water pour out!!
Students took turns adding a smiley face to a graph each time we added a cup of water to the diapers. After both diapers leaked, we counted the smiley faces to see which one held the most water.
To help us understand the concept of most, two friends stacked blocks according to how many smiley faces we counted...one set for the diaper and one set for the pull-up.
We were then able to look at the stacks of blocks and determine which one was the most because one stack was taller than the other. Our winner...the pull-up!! It held 2 more cups of water than the diaper!
Perhaps the coolest part of our experiment came at the end. We cut the diapers apart and felt the squishy insides of the wet diapers (no worries...I made them promise to never try this at home....I warned them that it wouldn't be just water in a wet diaper they might find at home!)!
